"Occupying Emotions" (A Descriptive Tale of an Afternoon at Zucotti Park)

I headed to Zucotti Park ("Liberty Square") for the first time in a week today, since before my trip to Atlanta, to see how things are progressing with the protests on its 30th day. Hard to believe it's been a whole month already! I was surprised to see how much more organized it all has become, with food donations received, a big communal kitchen with utensils being washed, food being shared in solidarity, etc.

The scene around the park was diverse, with even more characters of all colors, ages, education and believes. A few minutes later, from the area where the press trucks are, Geraldo Rivera from Fox News (photo below) appeared surrounded by a TV crew, security guards, etc. and walked among the crowd towards the center of Zucotti among boos and insults to the network he works with. He never stopped flashing the same smile, and called someone in the crowd not to be obnoxious, to which he received an answer "Your mustache is obnoxious". He brought in music producer Russell Simmons and they did some live interview. Some folks were very willing to give their strong opinion on air. I didn't stay long as I almost got into a heated argument with a thuggish totally unprofessional member of his crew who was screaming at me not to touch their camera, while I (with my own press pass on my neck) was the one being pushed by them among the crowd. I almost wish he would have stirred some more trouble, to see how the crowd may have jumped all over him! People hate Fox news around there. I guess with reason.

Around the square, as always, police officers protecting the area, the protestors and the tourists walking by. Less number of policemen and no white shirt ones (those who have been more prone to violent repression of the protestors) on sight. The energy overall doesn't seem as tense as other days.

And there's even room for more positive emotions as well... A tree at the south side has been turned into a place of worship with a sign that says "Community Altar: Sacred Space", and with offerings like flowers, candles, fruits, pictures, and even a drawing of John Lennon and Yoko Ono. Around it, a large group of people were sitting eyes closed, meditating.

At the opposite side of Zucotti, voices of people's assembly breaking the silence, some people singing and clapping, bringing people together, a man with a circle of people around him explaining why there's the need for a true new social revolution. Who knows what will bring and what will happen, but at least one thing can't be denied: the #OccupyWallStreet movement has found a way of bringing people together and start a dialogue that should have started a long time ago, when everyone had hoped Obama would change the disappointed landscape of today's America, but hasn't that much (yet).

Yes We DID! [365.149]

Yes We DID! [365.149]

Last night wasn't perfect. For one, Californians voted to support bigotry, and that breaks my heart.

But.

We just elected Barack Obama to be our next president!

I'm wearing a white shirt today. My family has always had a tradition, after an election, of wearing black if things didn't go our way, as a way of mourning what could have been. I first remember doing this when Harvey Gantt lost to Jesse Helms down in NC in 1990 (I was 7). I tend to credit Helms with destroying my faith in humanity, during that campaign (though having learned, a couple years earlier, what "trickle down economics" meant, and that Reagan and his followers believed in it, had already done some serious damage to it). To see someone use such blatantly racist advertising and techniques during their campaign, and for that person to win...it certainly shattered my little 7-year-old sense of justice.

And now we just elected a black man to be our next president. I almost wish Helms were still alive so that he could see this, see people reject, at least in part, his brand of hate and bigotry. And to see me wearing my celebratory white shirt. Take that, you bastard!

We just gave ourselves a calm, intelligent, compassionate, thoughtful, deliberative, rational, reasonable president...what a change. I'm so freaking happy. I love you all.
